The son of a Baptist preacher is forced to participate in a church-supported gay conversion program after being forcibly outed to his parents.
Joel Edgerton shows us the horrors behind gay-conversion therapies through the real story of Jared Eamons, a young boy who was forced to assist to one of these centers when their parents found out he was gay. Starring Lucas Hedges and Nicole Kidman, “Boy Erased” narrates the inhuman experiences that some gay people still have to go through in America, a country where these therapies are still legal in many states.
The fact that there are some people who believe that they can change someone’s identity, that they can “cure” gay people, is terrifying. The most disturbing thing that the movie shows us is how the people in charge of this kind of centers actually don´t have any qualification whatsoever. They are not real doctors or psychologists, and, furthermore, none of the “therapies” they promote are based on scientific facts. And still, they allow this horror, not only in America but also in other countries.
Fortunately, the story of Jared (Lucas Hedges) ends up well. He survived the therapy and lives to tell his story, and with this movie, we can understand better what these centers are really like, and the real damage they cause in the young boys and girls who are forced to go there. Those are some of the most powerful moments in the movie, when they show how the people are treated in those therapies, and Edgerton captures the suffering and the pain of the patients extremely well. It is tough to go through some scenes, but at the same time, I feel it’s very important to see the reality of these centers. Edgerton also shows what the people who are forced to take these therapies are willing to do just to escape that nightmare, and those aspects of the movie will make you think about this situation a lot.
Both Lucas Hedges and Nicole Kidman do a great job as Jared and his mother, Nancy. They have good chemistry on screen, and even though Kidman is very talented and always does a good job, it’s the young Hedges who proves again how incredibly talented he is. His last scene with his father, portrayed by Russell Crowe, is probably one of the best moments in the entire film.
“Boy Erased” is a very good and necessary movie that gives us the opportunity to know more about the reality of thousands of teenagers around the world, and more specifically, in America. It may be difficult to enjoy this film as you could do with other movies, but everything they show and tell is important, and we should be aware of it.
