Why “Joker” works

There’s a lot you can say about this movie. Todd Phillips has created a very controversial and unique film that will divide audiences across the globe, and I’m sure that was the intention. As a comic book movie, “Joker” is not that special. It doesn´t have amazing action sequences or a gigantic cast of heroes. This is not that kind of movie. Does that mean that “Joker” is not good? Is this movie a complete failure? Not at all.

When reality surpasses fiction

Heath Ledger’s Joker is, probably, the most beloved and respected portrayal of the character. Ledger did such a good job with his interpretation of the Joker, that he won an Oscar. But his Joker had a Batman to fight, someone that could stop him. His relationship with the Dark Knight is, arguably, the most interesting aspect of these characters. So, how can they make a movie about the Joker, without Batman?

Well, the answer is simple. They didn´t. “Joker” is not the movie you are expecting. Yes, the Joker is the main character, but you only see him as this twisted villain at the end of this movie. This film is about Arthur Fleck, the man that becomes the Joker, and how he ended up that way.

Todd Phillips and Scott Silver’s screenplay tells the story of a man with mental illness, and how society decided to exclude him because of that. This premise is so well developed during the movie, that, sometimes, you can feel really bad about Arthur and everything that he has to go through. And this is a very delicate matter, because, unfortunately, it’s something that happens nowadays. Arthur is someone that needs help, but the world seems to not care about him. Of course, this is not an excuse for what he does, but it’s very interesting to see such a realistic take on a character like the Joker.

The most interesting part of this movie is not the Joker doing crazy things or killing people just to piss off Batman. What really sticks with you once you’ve watched the movie is the scary truth behind the origin of this Joker. A man who could not take care of himself becomes a monster due to the fact that the society where he lives turned his back on him. And the scariest aspect of this idea is that it’s not something that only happens in comic books.

“I can´t believe I feel bad about him”

As I said, there are certain moments where you feel bad about Arthur and what he has to go through. At first, I thought that feeling bad about this individual, who would end up being one of the most dangerous criminals on Gotham, wasn´t right. I could not feel that way about someone who could do the horrible things that the Joker does. However, that’s the entire point of this film. It reminded me of the dynamic between Batman and Joker during the events of “The Killing Joke”.

“All it takes is one bad day to reduce the sanest man alive to lunacy. That’s how far the world is from where I am. Just one bad day.” It’s clear that Phillips took some inspiration for his movie from this story, which I understand. It’s probably the best way to create an interesting dynamic between characters. The Joker represents someone who, as he says, has lost everything. He has nothing to give his life meaning. And at the end of the movie, after finding out certain things about his own past, he decides to go full dark.

What I really like about this idea is that it can be applied to anyone, heroes and villains. And that’s what makes heroes so interesting, the fact that they overcome their fears and traumas to fight for what is right. However, in this film, we are introduced to someone who could not face his traumas on his own. Arthur needs help, and that’s why I felt bad about him. He didn´t have anyone to help him, and his life was horrible.

Now, even though I think that the origin of this Joker is brilliant, and gives him some kind of humanity, I know that he is the bad guy. We all know. What he does, especially in the third act of the film, is really disturbing, and after watching that, there’s no way back. Arthur is no longer there, it’s just the Joker. And you start feeling bad about the people of Gotham, mainly, because they don´t have Batman to protect them.

Can the Joker exist without Batman?

One of the most shocking elements of this film, besides everything the Joker does at the end of the movie, is the fact that Batman doesn´t exist. He is not around, so the Joker has no opponent. This is something that a lot of fans could be angry about. The Joker is at his best when he is rivaling Batman. They are, arguably, one of the best duos in comic book history. So the fact that Bruce doesn’t dress up as a bat every night, should be a problem. However, Phillips cleverly avoids this issue by locking up the Joker. He is in prison, and everything is over, right? Well, not really.

One of the best ideas that Phillips develops in this movie is how the Joker becomes a symbol of a revolution. The revolution against the rich people of Gotham. The Joker is incredibly powerful and scary because even when he has been arrested, his ideas are still alive. There are people fighting in the streets against the aristocracy.

In this case, yes. The Joker can exist without Batman. It’s sad that we can’t see THIS Joker against Batman, but it’s not something that doesn´t work.

Joker’s huge problem

There’s, however, one problem that comes with this interpretation of the character. And that problem has a name: Thomas Wayne. Phillips and Silver created an amazing antagonist for this movie, but the fact that he was Thomas Wayne, is a problem. Why?

Well, let’s start by saying that Bruce Wayne / Batman is one of the most famous characters in the world. He is the favorite superhero of thousands of people and one of the most well-known superheroes of all time. So, the idea that Bruce’s father was such a despicable human being, someone who would say such horrible things about the people of Gotham, is not right. At least, for me. I understand what they tried to do with the character, but I think that they didn´t have to name him Thomas Wayne. He could have been anyone. The problem is that when THAT thing happens to Wayne at the end of “Joker”, instead of saying “Oh no, what a tragedy”, you end up saying “Yeah, he deserves that”. 

Phillips and Phoenix, a great duo

“Joker” is a very good film overall. It has some pacing issues, which I’m sure some people would notice, but there are also some incredible scenes. Joaquin Phoenix is a very good Joker, very different from Ledger’s interpretation, but he respects the core essence of the character. He is scary and funny (in a Joker way), and, as I said, it’s sad that we won’t see more of him as the Joker.

Phillips, as a director, does a good job with the artistic part of the film. There are some really amazing shots throughout the movie, which results in a film that is beautiful and dark in a way that you can´t understand until you watch it. However, there are other elements that don´t work as well. The main problem is the pacing, as I said. The movie feels longer than it is, and there are certain moments during the second act, where the story doesn´t seem like it’s moving forward. One could say that the film is boring, but I wouldn´t go that way. It’s a slow burn. Phillips builds the tension little by little until the climax arrives at the end.

Why Joker works

Warner Bros. is having some trouble promoting this movie. And I know there are some elements that could trigger some people. However, we should remind ourselves that this is the story of the Joker, a character that is best known for his twisted mind and horrible actions. Phillips creates a film about a character that suffers from a lot of real issues and ends up becoming that monster we all know.

“Joker” works because the people who made this movie understood the character and decided to give him a more realistic backstory. There are no chemicals involved in the origin of this Joker. He is a real person with real problems, someone you could know. That’s what makes this movie special, and why I think a lot of people could have some trouble watching it. And that’s ok. Maybe “Joker” is not for everyone. But if you are a fan of the character, I’m sure you will enjoy this film a lot.

El vicio del poder (Vice)

“Vice” narra la historia jamás contada de Dick Cheney, uno de los hombres que más poder tuvo durante sus años como vicepresidente de George W. Bush, y cómo sus acciones repercutieron en América y el mundo entero.

Escrita y dirigida por Adam McKay, “El vicio del poder” retoma el formato tan peculiar que el director usó en su anterior trabajo, “La Gran Apuesta”, para contarnos la historia de Dick Cheney y su ascenso al poder.

El trabajo de McKay vuelve a ser realmente sobresaliente. Como guionista, consigue condensar una historia llena de términos complejos, nombres, eventos y fechas en dos horas de puro entretenimiento. El ritmo de la cinta es perfecto, ya que mantiene nuestra atención en todo momento, valiéndose del humor (un tanto absurdo) para relajar y amenizar los acontecimientos que narra. McKay aprovecha las poco más de dos horas que tiene para crear una historia ágil, fácil de entender y, cuando lo necesita, divertida.

Ahora bien, ¿es realmente una comedia? Estamos hablando de un hombre que consiguió el poder absoluto y cuyas acciones llevaron a la muerte de miles de personas. En este sentido, la cinta permanece todo lo parcial que puede, y deja en manos del espectador cualquier juicio de valor posible. Sin embargo, es cierto que McKay no defiende en ningún momento a Cheney, lo cual me parece el movimiento más acertado.

Es realmente fascinante ver el ascenso al poder de esta figura de la política estadounidense. Cheney alcanzó un poder que pocos han tenido, y empezó siendo un don nadie como quien dice. Sin embargo, sus métodos (a pesar de que no se conozcan con total certeza), lo llevaron a la cima, como su mujer y él siempre quisieron. La película nunca entra a explorar del todo si realmente Cheney fue así siempre, o fueron los años lo que lo convirtieron en una persona realmente ávida de poder. Aunque, sinceramente, no creo que nadie lo sepa con total seguridad.

En cuanto al reparto, Christian Bale y Amy Adams son los absolutos protagonistas de la cinta. Hay muchos grandes nombres en ella, pero sus papeles son pequeños, o meros cameos. Sin embargo, Bale y Adams bordan sus actuaciones. No creo que ninguno de los dos haya demostrado nada nuevo o especial con esta cinta, pero su talento es innegable y son ellos dos quienes llevan todo el peso de la historia.

En general, “El vicio del poder” es una muy buena cinta, en la que McKay pone de nuevo toda la carne en el asador para contar una de las historias más interesantes de la política estadounidense. Sin embargo, no hay ninguna otra novedad en su estilo como director o guionista, y aunque el resultado final es una cinta entretenida y bien realizada, queda un poco lejos de su anterior largometraje, “La Gran Apuesta”.

He served as the Vice President of the United States of America from 2001 to 2009, and his actions had a great impact on the development of political relations between America and the rest of the world.  

After his successful “The Big Short”, a movie many of us loved, director and screenwriter Adam McKay decided to tell the story of Dick Cheney, and how he became one of the most influential politicians of the United States.

McKay proves again that he is an amazing screenwriter. “Vice” tells a very complex story, full of difficult terminology, names, and events, but somehow, the director manages to condense everything in two hours of pure entertainment. The pacing is excellent, mainly because the movie catches our attention instantly and never becomes repetitive or boring. McKay is able to handle the complexity of the script adding the right amount of humor necessary to create a very exciting experience.

But, can we describe “Vice” as a comedy? Dick Cheney was someone who managed to get his hands on absolute power and some of his actions led to the death of many people. In that sense, the movie stays as partial as possible, and let audiences thinking by themselves about everything that happens in the movie (and happened in real life). However, McKay never defends Cheney´s actions, something I really think was the right move.

One of the most fascinating parts of the movie was the evolution of Cheney. He reached absolute political power, but he started being a nobody. His methods allowed him to become a very influential figure, and he was one of the most powerful Vide presidents of America. The movie never explores whether he always was a ruthless and vicious political animal, or he became one during his professional career, but I think no one can answer that question.

The cast is amazing and full of big names, but Christian Bale and Amy Adams are the real standouts. Most of the actors and actress that appear in the movie have a minor role. For instance, Naomi Watts has a very small role and even Alfred Molina makes a quick cameo. I don´t think Bale or Adams have shown anything new with their performance, but they carry the weight of the whole movie on their own, and that deserves some recognition.

“Vice” is a really good movie, which proves once more how incredibly talented is Adam McKay. However, this is just another Adam McKay movie. It´s good, but not great, mainly because it feels very similar to his other big movie, “The Big Short”. Despite all of that, “Vice” deserves to be seen on the big screen, and now is the right time to do it.

Viudas

Cuando sus maridos mueren mientras perpetraban un atraco, sus mujeres, lideradas por Veronica (Viola Davis), deberán unirse y realizar un último golpe con el que saldar sus deudas y continuar con sus vidas. 

Steve McQueen regresa por todo lo alto con “Viudas”, una cinta con una historia cuya propuesta nos atrapa desde el principio y un reparto lleno de grandes nombres como  Viola Davis, Michelle Rodríguez, Elizabeth Debicki, Cynthia Erivo o Colin Farrel, entre otros.

Viola Davis vuelve a demostrar que es una de esas estrellas que brilla en todos y cada uno de los papeles que interpreta. Sin embargo, son las dos actrices menos conocidas, Elizabeth Debicki y Cynthia Erivo, quienes destacan entre sus compañeras. Debicki, a quien no hemos visto mucho en la gran pantalla, tiene una de las subtramas más interesantes y algunas de las mejores escenas. Es realmente sorprendente ver a la actriz en un papel que, a pesar de que al principio parezca poco importante, termina siendo uno de los mejores. Por otro lado, la recién llegada Cynthia Erivo (a quien recientemente vimos en “Malos tiempos en El Royale), prueba de nuevo que su carisma no fue algo fortuito, y que está aquí para quedarse.

El resto del reparto realiza un buen trabajo, pero sus papeles no tienen tanto peso en la trama ni tampoco brillan como los demás. Aun así, Michelle Rodriguez o Daniel Kaluuya son algunos de los miembros del reparto que más destacan, por detrás de sus otras compañeras.

El guion es el otro punto fuerte de la cinta. La historia no es muy compleja, pero se toma su tiempo para presentar a los personajes, sus motivaciones, los lazos que los unen entre sí, y todo lo que necesitamos saber como espectadores para entender todo el conjunto.

Sin embargo, hay mucho que disfrutar. La cinta tiene varias sorpresas, algunas realmente inesperadas, que mantienen la tensión argumental por todo lo alto.

¿Lo malo? Que el tercer acto no está a la altura del resto de la cinta. “Viudas” es algo así como la versión mejorada, oscura y dramática de lo que fue “Ocean´s 8”. Sin embargo, el tercer acto nos deja un poco fríos. El golpe final, eso por lo que han luchado durante toda la cinta termina siendo realmente sencillo, y nos deja con una sensación agridulce. Está bien, pero podría haber sido mejor.

Por último, me gustaría destacar el trabajo de McQueen como director. No solo consigue crear una interesante historia sobre atracos y mujeres dispuesta a todo, sino que, por el camino, nos regala algún que otro gran momento cinematográfico, de esos que pocas veces se ven. Hay tomas y escenas que no solo cuentan con un buen guion, sino que, además, está tremendamente bien rodadas. McQueen consigue que escenas que hemos visto mil veces en el cine, parezcan nuevas.

En general, “Viudas” es una gran película. Está a la altura de otras cintas del mismo género, y, aunque no sea tan profunda como pudiera parecer, el increíble reparto y los giros de guion que no vemos venir son suficientes para mantenernos atento durante toda la cinta.

Misión Imposible: Fallout

Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) y su equipo del IMF (Alec Baldwin, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames) junto con algunos aliados familiares (Rebecca Ferguson, Michelle Monaghan) en una carrera contra el tiempo después de que una misión salga mal.

Christopher McQuarrie y Tom Cruise vuelven a reunir al equipo para una nueva aventura con Ethan Hunt. Después de la gran acogida que tuvo “Nación Secreta”, el director y el actor vuelven a la carga con esta cinta, en la que ambos llevan al límite sus habilidades.

“Fallout” es una buena película de acción. McQuarrie ya demostró que en lo que respecta a rodar escenas trepidantes es un artista. Y desde luego, Cruise ya ha demostrado en varias ocasiones lo mucho que le gusta llevar a cabo él mismo esas peligrosas escenas de acción. Sin embargo, en esta cinta tenemos mucho más. Las peleas están muy bien coreografiadas, en especial la que tiene lugar en el baño de París, y el tercer acto, aunque largo, mantiene la tensión en todo momento.

Es cierto que, el principal problema que presenta la cinta es el guion. Hay algunas cosas que no tienen sentido cuando te pones a pensar en qué ha sucedido, aunque en el momento la adrenalina haya podido hacer que lo pasaras por alto. Y sí, el tercer acto es muy largo, y se nota. Esto hace que la película se resienta hacia el final, cuando crees que todo va a terminar, pero todavía quedan otros 45 minutos.

El reparto es otro punto fuerte. Volvemos a encontrarnos con viejos conocidos como Benji, y se agradece tener de vuelta a Rebecca Ferguson en la saga. Junto a ellos, la inclusión de Angela Bassett como jefa de la CIA y, en especial, la de Henry Cavill, dan un aire fresco a la franquicia.

Sin embargo, y aunque es cierto que “Misión Imposible Fallout” es una gran película de acción, que lleva aún más al límite a los protagonistas, creo que la saga necesita un giro nuevo y radical. La historia de Ethan Hunt parece haber llegado a un punto en el que ya no se puede ir más lejos, y es posible que otro director y guionista puedan darle una nueva perspectiva.

Fallout es una buena cinta, entretenida y con buen ritmo, que deja un sabor de boca un tanto agrio hacia el final debido a su larga duración, y que, en general, no creo que supere a su predecesora. Sin embargo, el espectador disfrutará de esta nueva misión, sobre todo si es fan de la franquicia. Sin embargo, creo que es el momento perfecto para enfocar la saga en una nueva dirección, y ayudar a que siga adelante.

Gorrión Rojo

Dominika Egorova es una de las mejores bailarinas rusas, y gracias a ello, puede mantener a su madre enferma. Sin embargo, una noche acaba viendo algo que no debería haber visto, y se le ofrece una única salida: convertirse en Gorrión, un grupo de hombres y mujeres jóvenes que usará su cuerpo de la forma que sea, para poder ayudar a su país.

Francis Lawrence se reúne de nuevo con Jennifer Lawrence en esta nueva cinta, después de haber dirigido a la actriz en la saga que la hizo famosa, “Los Juegos del Hambre”. Y a pesar de que Lawrence sigue demostrando que es una buena actriz, los proyectos que elige no corren la misma suerte, pues “Gorrión Rojo” es otra película más, incapaz de destacar en ningún aspecto, salvo en lanzar buenas ideas a la nada.

El primer acto de esta cinta es bastante bueno. La música y la escena inicial con el personaje de Lawrence bailando son un perfecto punto de partida para la historia. Sin embargo, cuando Dominika sale de la academia de Gorriones, el clima que habían logrado crear se desmorona por completo, y el guion se vuelve un caos.

La historia, como digo, tiene buenas ideas, y se pueden ver a lo largo de la película. Sin embargo, no se aprovechan en absoluto. El guion se esfuerza tanto por ir dejando pistas que justifiquen el giro final, que se olvida de que su principal objetivo es construir una historia clara y sólida.

El reparto, en general, hace un buen trabajo. Lawrence defiende su papel como solo ella sabe hacer, pero no es suficiente para mantener todo el peso de la cinta. A pesar de ello, el guion si hace un buen trabajo convirtiéndola en un personaje bastante real, lo que facilita empatizar con ella.

El otro gran problema de la cinta es la falta de acción. El suspense en cierto punto está bien logrado, pero la mayoría de las escenas, sobre todo durante el segundo acto, son muy lentas y parece que no llevan a nada, lo que podría haber sido arreglado sencillamente con un par de escenas de acción.

Como digo, el final guarda alguna que otra sorpresa, y la cinta en general te mantiene interesado en casi todo momento. Sin embargo, “Gorrión Rojo” no destaca en ningún aspecto, por lo que no es realmente una cinta que merezca la pena ver en la gran pantalla.

Black Panther

Después de lo ocurrido en “Capitán América: Civil War”, T’Challa regresa a su país natal, Wakanda, para ser coronado rey, tras la muerte de su padre. Sin embargo, el nuevo monarca se enfrentará a un poderoso e inteligente adversario, Erik Killmonger, que planea hacerse con el trono de la nación, y usar sus poderosas armas de vibranium para conquistar el mundo. 

El debut de Black Panther en la última entrega del Capitán América fue uno de los aspectos de la cinta que más dio que hablar. Chadwick Boseman se convirtió automáticamente en uno de los preferidos del público, y su película en solitario por fin está en cines.

La historia de Black Panther se sitúa una semana después de “Capitán América: Civil War”, en un momento en el que T’Challa debe asumir su puesto como rey de Wakanda. La historia, por tanto, no solo nos introducirá en esta ciudad tan tecnológica y a sus diferentes tribus, sino que nos permitirá conocer más del propio T’Challa.

El aspecto político está muy presente en la cinta, y está manejado a la perfección. Las tramas e intrigas que rodean al trono están ahí, y se desarrollan a lo largo de la cinta. Sin embargo, Ryan Coogler no solo ha sabido explorar el aspecto político, sino las tradiciones y la cultura africana a la perfección.

Wakanda es una mezcla casi perfecta entre el pasado, con sus rituales, sus tribus y otros aspectos, y el futuro, con la increíble tecnología que poseen, y cómo pueden alcanzar algunas que cosas que todavía tenemos que soñar. Pero como digo, esta mezcla está realizada muy bien, de manera que no choca en ningún momento que una cultura como esta exista en el universo de Marvel.

La música juega un papel importantísimo en la historia. Los ritmos africanos acompañan a muchas escenas, y son una gran adición en ciertos momentos, como pueden ser las dos batallas rituales en las cascadas de Wakanda.

Es cierto que la historia puede ser un poco predecible, hacia el final de la misma. Hay ciertos acontecimientos que sabes que van a tener lugar, o que pasarán de una forma y no de otra. Sin embargo, los personajes, que son sin lugar a dudas el punto más fuerte de la película, hacen que el viaje en sí se disfrute igualmente.

Letitia Wright y Danai Gurira son los dos mejores personajes de la película. La primera, que interpreta a Shuri, hermana de T’Challa, acapara cada minuto que aparece en pantalla. No solo es uno de los dos personajes (siendo el otro Martin Freeman) que aporta el punto cómico, sino que rápidamente nos encariñamos con ella, y eso es gracias al gran carisma que posee la propia Letitia Wright. Por su parte, Danai Gurira, es la protagonista de algunos de los momentos más impactantes de la historia, en lo que respecta a la acción. La general de las Dora Milaje pasa a ser una de las mujeres más poderosas y feroces de este universo Marvel, gracias a su increíble forma de luchar y usar la lanza.

Por otro lado, Chadwick Boseman, Martin Freeman, Winston Duke y Andy Serkis también destacan en sus respectivos papeles. Boseman vuelve a hacer un gran trabajo como T’Challa, dejándonos explorar un poco más de sus intereses y sus ideas.

Winston Duke, que interpreta a M’Baku, el líder de una tribu rival, nos deja también con ganas de ver más sobre él, y poder explorar su relación con el trono.

Martin Freeman y Andy Serkis aportan los momentos divertidos, en especial Serkis, cuyo Ulysses Klaue podría ser perfectamente un villano más, pero que acaba destacando gracias al carisma del propio Serkis.

Ahora bien, es cierto que mucho se ha hablado de  Michael B. Jordan como Killmonger, el villano de la cinta. Sin embargo, su papel es realmente pequeño, y aunque es cierto que tiene una escena en particular en la que podemos ver cuán cruel y poderoso es, no creo que sea uno de los villanos que más vayan a destacar. Sus intenciones están bien descritas, pero al final, acaba diluyéndose en la historia.

Y, aunque pueda parecer raro, mientras que los personajes de la cinta son uno de los elementos más fuertes de la misma, son las escenas de acción el eslabón débil de “Black Panther”. Para empezar, hay únicamente dos grandes escenas de acción, que, en efecto, están muy bien logradas, y se disfrutan muchísimo. Pero el resto de la película no cuenta con ningún otro momento que podamos considerar como acción. Y quizás, uno de los elementos que más llama la atención, es el poco uso que se hace de los movimientos felinos de Black Panther. Lo que vimos en “Civil War” no está aquí. Por alguna razón, la única escena en la que podríamos haber visto al personaje en solitario, demostrando sus increíbles movimientos, está muy oscura y es tan rápida, que cuando te das cuenta, ya ha acabado.

Y como digo, la acción que hay en la película está muy bien, pero es poca, dentro de una cinta del género. Quizás en la secuela, si Coogler vuelve a dirigir, pueda introducir más acción, más movimientos de pantera, y más de Danai Gurira y sus Dora Milaje.

Y por último, algo que para muchos puede suponer un problema, y para otros quizá no, es el hecho de que la película, como tal, está tan aislada del Universo Cinematográfico de Marvel como Wakanda del resto del mundo. Tan solo el personaje de Freeman sirve como enlace con otras historias, y aun así, sigue pareciendo que estamos viendo una película independiente. Como digo, no es algo malo, pero estando a las puertas de “Vengadores: Infinity War”, uno podría haber esperado ciertas conexiones, como la por ahora desconocida Gema del Alma, o alguna que otra escena post-créditos mucho más interesante, puesto que las dos que hay no revelan gran cosa.

En definitiva, “Black Panther” es una muy buena película, perfecta en algunos aspectos, pero no en todo. Una historia que respeta y ensalza la cultura africana, y que pone en el centro de la historia a unos personajes tan bien conseguidos, que nos dejan con ganas de seguir explorando sus historias en el futuro. Un gran comienzo para el género superheroico en un año que promete ser realmente bueno.
